October is here!

Tell us what you like and don't like about this month and why. I love the autumn season-the bright colors, the smells-wood fires in chimneys, the coolness of the mornings after summer's heat, the opportunity to rest from yard chores and gardening. Don't like the Halloween season-its greediness and excess of candy, emphasis on witches and magic-I know it's just imaginary or is it? I do like to take photos of my grandkids dressed up in costumes, but don't like to wear a costume myself-ever except for my pioneer costume. That's just me.

  1. I love love love the sound of the crunching leaves underneath my feet. I love the crispness in the air, I love being able to wear long pants and shirts and a light scarf, I love the array of colors on the mountains, I love the pumpkin and corn fields. I love caramel apples. I love halloween costume shopping (or making) I like you don't like the creepy, scary stuff that goes along with Halloween, I like the cute little kids dressed up as their favorite super hero or animal. There is just so much to love about this time of year. I always feel like baking.

  2. I love almost everything you said, except fires in chimneys, no chimney fires here in Houston - still too hot. I absolutely love the cool mornings and nights when we are blessed to have one (or two or so). I love that darkness comes early, I see no reason to have daylight until 9 or 10 at night. I love that mornings are dark longer also. I don't like the whole Halloween thing anymore, it is getting too dangerous (for kids).

  3. I think Autumn is the softest time of year. There seems to be a tenderness to her.

As summer closes the door behind she leaves a chill in the air. Fall covers herself in vibrant robes to warm her as she enters the scene. But as she waits for winter to lay upon her breast, she begins to peel away layers of her festive cloak, and lies subdued, shyly preparing to submit to his whims.

Sounds seem to be played with a soft pedal. The clack, clack, clack of big wheels, and screams of excited children on their bicycles is replaced with with the shuffling of feet walking in the leaves on the way to school.

Flowers seem to fold their tents.

The animal kingdom gathers their famiies together.

Mom's, without their little ones to chase, whistle in the kitchen while baking, or setting aside the bounty of their gardens.

Halloween was originally All Hallows Eve. Hallow is literally to make holy, sanctify or consecrate. I feel like that's the spirit of Autumn. Fall is a time to take a deep breath as summer ends and glorify in the purity of the night skies and the crispness in the air.

Halloween is, for my family at least, a time for fun... a time for reflection... We have a family tradition called, "The Seven Days of Witchalenea" that made it a time of good spirits and the Holy ghost. And hey!! I'd never dream of denouncing a time of year that made it okay to indulge in a little chocolate.

Chandi and I are excited to wear our pretty witches hats, pointy boots, and glamorous capes. We're going to shake a few cobwebs off of our imaginations and play this year. The only spirits we intend to have accompany us on our night out are the spirits of fun and goodwill.

  4. Ditto. Autumn is my favorite season! The panorama of colors in the leaves.

  5. I too like the feeling and smell in the air. I love all the garden produce and the fresh apples (although most are too ripe for me now), but my pomegranates are almost ready, and the colors in the mountains are fabulous.

  7. Lovely, Lin.

I would marvel to find a person who didn't love this season and the fun and color it offers--apple picking, hay rides, walks in the warm sunlight, dried leaves underfoot, the smell of wet leaves in the soft and reluctant rain.

    Beautiful post. Thanks.
