Columbus or Leif Erikson?

1825 was before 1842. Leif-great name, Eric's son was a son of Iceland (I have many ANCESTORS from there) and grandson of Norway. Let's hear it for the Scandinavians!

Interesting quote from Bill Gates: What if Columbus had been told, 'Chris, baby, don't go now. Wait until we've solved our number-one priorities––war and famine, poverty and crime, pollution and disease, illiteracy and racial hatred...

  2. What was in 1842? Columbus is supposed to have arrived in 1492 and Leif Erikson much earlier. I'm really thinking we should just have a REAL Discoverer's Day instead of doing all the individual ones leaving out other peoples who may have come even earlier. I say "real" because even though Hawaii is supposed to be celebrating Discoverer's Day everybody still refers to it as Columbus Day.

  5. I was thinking along Deb's lines. If only....

But let's hear it for those intrepid Scandinavians. While we let our Italian friends have their day (off).

  6. Interesting quote by Gates. I am all for a Discoverer's Day then we can celebrate Columbus or Lief, or both, and all of those that came before.

  7. Discoverers' Day it should be, but if we are going to have two different days to celebrate, it's only fitting that Leif's comes first!

  9. I'm with Kay on a day for all. The poor native people didn't fare very well with any of the discovers.. They all thought they had the right to the land...sad really... Michelle
