Objects for Writing

We each chose a common kitchen article to write about. This is what I wrote:

She searched for her kitchen tool
before beginning the day's labors
cooking the family's simple meals.
Lost without her implement,
she could not stir the mush
simmering over the open fire.

Where could it be? The small dugout
was dark and crowded...a bed, table
and a few shelves filled with only basic
necessities for their survival-corn meal,
molasses, water, beans, and dried meat.
It was here yesterday...she remembered.

Skillfully made by her loving husband,
another one could be made anew but that
would waste his precious work time.
Now the family's mush was boiling
without the necessary primitive tool
needed to stir and smash the lumps.

Her earthly life was like that at times
everything seemed thrown together
waiting for the proper preparation
and the stirring in of opposition
which wasn't lacking in her life.

Basic survival skills and difficult tasks
filled each day of back breaking labor.
Homesteading was a constant challenge
aided by few store bought luxuries.
She missed her old wooden spoon.

Writing Ideas

In our Writers WORDshop we are studying metaphors and similies. They certainly add interest to creative writing. Here's some I wrote during our class taught by one of the members of the group Wilma: The moon is like...an open window that reveals God to us. A shoe is like...a protective parent enclosing us in a safe embrace. Our nose points the way to go like the needle on a compass that we follow. An eyebrow shields us from the sun like a beach umbrella.

She was as lonely as a single dandelion lost in a field of sunflowers. They were as tall and thin as trees bereft of leaves buffeted by winter's cold winds. He was as plump as a balloon ready to burst. Try your hand at them. It's fun!

RESISTANCE comes creeping like a sly cat wanting to leap on an unsuspecting prey, yet waiting for just the right moment to pounce.
SHYNESS is a wall that protects us from hurt and limits our adventures.
COURAGE with faith encourages growth like fertilizer helps plants to grow and bloom.

Role of Adversity

It was an unexpected visitor,
I opened the door unknowingly.
Coming in quickly and quietly,
it spread throughout the room.

I realized too late what had happened, REGRETS multiplied.
Unable to move, letting the reality of the moment settle;
drowning in despair, I could not break loose from its grip.
Struggling only increased its tentacles around my heart
till I though I would burst. A muffled scream escaped my lips
Why me, it's just not fair-I didn't ask for this or want it
My life was so carefully planned and then this happened
WHY?

But LIFE is what happens...while you are making other plans
and would continue whether or not I did. The only choice for me
was to act OR react. Step aside and OBSERVE what was happening
then seek for strength and guidance from God to carry on,
not stuck in ANGER but finding needed FORGIVENESS.
Letting go, learning from the experience, healing and time
were necessary for TRUST to return to my life after the DIVORCE.

Another POEM:

REJECTION comes again and again waiting for recognition due BUT not expressed. ABANDONMENT sits alone, waiting for rejection which always comes as expected. SELF ESTEEM wanes when buffeted by the voices of rejection,
and abandonment. Who am I? No answers can be heard over the tumult of buffeting waves. ANGER hides behind DEPRESSION waiting to perform its quiet dance of destitution.
