Following a Trail

Others go before us and make trails. On our walk by the river last week we hiked on a path now named in honor of Bart Anderson. The sign says it all: "Historian, Master Lecturer, Author, Spellbinding Storyteller, and Renowned Trailmaster." He died last year in June just before the marker was dedicated, but he had spent his life capturing, retelling and preserving the history of our area.

I couldn't help but think of him as I walked on this trail and visited remains of early Indian villages probably Anasazis on the top of a cliff with a commanding view of the area. Remains of grain storage areas are still there. Bart Anderson loved to retell stories of the early settlers of St. George and their interactions with the Native Americans. He helped preserve our community's legacy. Something we all need to do for our own families.

  1. I don't think there are enough storytellers alive to tell us about the past. I love listening to them.

  2. I think these reminders are very important. Look how this marker furthered his story--putting it in Connecticut this evening.

    A beautiful walk. Thanks, Lin.

  3. He sounded like a very amazing man and how fortunate he told stories so others might learn. It is so very important to have storytellers so that we can pass on history and lore.
