Nature Notes-Busy Hummingbirds

Small little birds
with flapping wings
that move so fast,
just like lightning.

They dart here and there,
sucking sweet nectar
from our bird feeder,
like a small beggar.

Greedy little things,
they all love sugar
or flower pollen,
but they don't share.

I enjoy watching
their antics as they fly
busily about,
chasing others away.

The only hummers we get are the ruby-throated. I'd love to see some of the other breeds. We keep our hummer feeders well-stocked all summer, and the little birds appreciate it. A lady in the Kennebunk area had a hummer living in her sun porch one entire winter. Apparently he missed out when his buddies migrated, so he stayed in Maine for the winter.

I wish we had hummingbirds in Hawaii instead of the orchid eating bulbuls and mynahs.

I have only had ruby-throated hummingbirds here. Actually I was just sitting here watching one at the feeder in the back yard!

Well, done. they are greedy little beauties, but then they need to be to keep those wings buzzing.
