Patriot Day-fly your flag

September 11, 2001

A day of horror, shock filled the land of freedom
skies were slowly emptied of all airline traffic
foreign terrorists had cunningly crashed two planes
into the World Trade's twin towers in New York City
thousands of people were killed in the fiery explosions
disbelief sweep the land as we watched our fellowmen
jump to their death, fireman perished doing their duty
trying to save others, crowds panicked, normal life stopped

We all waited silently for more surprise attacks
was this the end of the world, Armageddon
in our country, watching tv scenes filled
with violence and panic, our souls grieved as one,
prayers were offered for lives lost, loved ones missing
normal lives disrupted by hatred’s revenge
life as we knew it would not continue the same
fear ruled as terror blanketed our land of America

  1. Thank you Lin. I have to admit that I didn't realize the date today and I was wondering why all the flags were flying in everyone's yards (including ours). A good reminder. Your thoughts made me recall sitting in my bedroom in our first house staring at the tv screen in disbelief.

  3. It's such a sad day. When I think of 9/11 I think of my son in Mali, West Africa when he and his Peace Corps friends heard about what happened in disbelief. For a while the Corps was nervous about the volunteers since Mali is a Muslim country but there was no need. Everyone there was sympathetic and felt badly for Americans.

  6. I didn't fly a flag...but, I did wear a lapel pin. It's good to remember, it's hard to re-open wounds. Thanks for writing about this, Lin.
